A long ship ride, a jetty and sandy paths: here's how to make Saint Martin's comfortable for older parents.
Saint Martin's Island can be a lovely trip for older parents, as long as it's planned at their pace. Here's what to think about, from the team at El Marena Eco Resort near Chera Dip.
The island opens only in the season the government sets. Last season (2025–26) it was open from 1 November to 31 January, with day trips only in November. A day trip is long and tiring for older people; if you can, wait for the months when overnight stays are allowed.
The ship
- The crossing from Nuniarchhara jetty in Cox's Bazar takes about 5 to 6 hours each way.
- Choose a comfortable seat class or a cabin; see ships compared.
- Bring seasickness tablets, water and a light snack.
Jetty and getting around
There's a walk along the jetty when you arrive, often in a crowd. Take your time and let others go first. There are no cars on the island; vans and rickshaws take you to your stay, about 25 minutes to El Marena. Our getting around article has more.

Choosing a room
- Duplex cottage: the double bed is downstairs, so parents needn't climb to the loft, and there's an attached bathroom, so no going outside at night. Breakfast is free.
- Single cottage and tent: shared bathroom, so less easy at night.
- Tell us when you book and we'll suggest the most suitable cottage.
Health
- Bring daily medicine plus a day or two extra in case the ships stop.
- The island has only a small hospital: see medical help.
- Shade at midday, a hat and plenty of water.
A gentle plan
- Day 1: arrive, rest, sunset from the balcony.
- Day 2: an early, short walk; skip the Chera Dip walk if the rocks are hard going. Afternoon rest, dinner at the resort.
- Day 3: a slow breakfast, then back to the jetty in good time.
