The island has a small hospital, and serious cases go to Teknaf by boat. Here's what to pack and what to do if someone gets ill or hurt.
Saint Martin's Island is far from a big hospital, so it's worth knowing what's there and packing well. Here's what we tell our guests at El Marena Eco Resort near Chera Dip.
The hospital on the island
The island has a 20-bed hospital (Desh Rupantor, 2023), for basic treatment. Patients who need more care are sent to Teknaf on the mainland: in October 2026, for example, two children were referred to Teknaf for further treatment (Ittefaq). Getting to the mainland depends on the boats and the weather.
Pack a small first-aid kit
- Any medicine you take every day, with enough for an extra day or two in case the ships stop.
- Seasickness tablets for the 5–6 hour crossing.
- Plasters, antiseptic and a bandage: coral rock cuts easily.
- Oral rehydration salts (ORS) and something for an upset stomach.
- Sunscreen, a hat and insect repellent.

Common problems, and how to avoid them
- Cuts from coral rock: wear sandals or water shoes on the rocky shore.
- Too much sun: shade at midday and plenty of water.
- Upset stomach: drink bottled water and eat freshly cooked food.
- Sea accidents: swim only where it's calm, never alone, and keep off the rocks at high tide.
In an emergency
- Call the national emergency number 999.
- If you're staying with us, call or WhatsApp the resort straight away and we'll help you get to the hospital.
- Keep your ship ticket and ID to hand in case you need to get back to the mainland quickly.
Travel insurance that covers medical costs is a good idea, and if anyone in your group has a health condition, ask your doctor before you go. Our safety tips article has more.
