Hotels in Saint Martin's Island: areas, types and how to choose

How to choose a hotel on Saint Martin's Island: check the season first, pick your end of the island and your kind of room, then ask eight questions before you pay an advance.

Search for hotels in Saint Martin's Island and you'll find a long list of names, photos and prices. The island is small, so the choice really comes down to four things: whether you can stay the night on your dates, which end of the island you sleep at, what kind of room you need, and what's included in the price. We run El Marena Eco Resort near Chera Dip, so we'll say clearly when we're talking about our own place.

Overnight stays depend on the season's rules. Last season (2025–26) they were allowed in December and January but not in November. When we wrote this (October 2026), the 2026–27 rules hadn't been published.

First: can you stay the night?

Saint Martin's is a government-declared Ecologically Critical Area, so the government decides each year when tourists can visit and whether they can stay overnight. In 2025–26 the island was open from 1 November to 31 January, November was for day trips only, and no more than 2,000 people could visit each day.

So before you compare hotels, check that overnight stays are allowed on your dates. A good hotel will tell you honestly if they aren't. Our article on the best time to visit Saint Martin explains the season month by month.

Two very different ends of the island

The jetty side (north). The ships dock at the jetty at the north end, the busiest part of the island. Day-trippers spend their few hours here, so this end is lively in the daytime. Staying here keeps you close to the jetty and the crowds.

The south, around Chera Dip. The southern end is quieter, with rocky shores, fewer people and dark, starry skies at night. From here you can walk to Chera Dip at low tide early in the morning, before the day-trippers arrive. It's a short ride from the jetty by local van, rickshaw or bike.

We compare the two ends in more detail in where to stay in Saint Martin.

Hotel, resort, cottage or tent?

People say "hotel" for every kind of place on the island, but the kind of room changes your trip more than the name on the sign. Here's what each usually means for you:

  • A hotel or guesthouse room: a room in a building. Ask whether the bathroom is attached and how far it is from where you want to spend your time.
  • A resort: rooms or cottages in their own grounds, often with a restaurant and open space. Ask what's actually on site and what's free for guests.
  • A cottage: a small house of its own, with more privacy and quiet. Ask how many people it sleeps and whether the bathroom is inside.
  • A tent: the cheapest way to sleep close to the beach. Bathrooms are usually shared, so ask where they are and how close.

At El Marena we have three kinds of stay: a two-storey duplex cottage on stilts for up to 4 (৳4,000–৳6,000) with an attached bathroom, a balcony, a hammock and a lookout tower; a single cottage for 2 (৳2,000–৳3,000) with a common bathroom; and a tent for 2 near the beach (৳1,000–৳1,500).

What a room costs

Prices on the island change with the day of the week and the season, so the number you see online may not be the number you pay. The biggest trap is per room versus per person: always ask which it is.

Our prices are for the whole cottage or tent, not per person. Sunday to Thursday is half our regular price, and Friday and Saturday 25% off. A duplex shared by four comes to ৳1,000 each. The full budget, with the ship and food, is in what a Saint Martin trip costs.

Eight things to check before you pay an advance

  1. Are overnight stays allowed on my dates this season?
  2. Is the price for the whole room or per person, and is it different on Friday and Saturday?
  3. Is the bathroom attached or shared?
  4. Where exactly is it, and how do I get there from the jetty?
  5. Do check-in and check-out fit the ship times? (Ships arrive around midday and leave the island at about 3 pm.)
  6. What's included, like breakfast or drinking water, and what costs extra?
  7. How much advance do you need, how do I pay it, and what happens if I cancel?
  8. Will you confirm the booking in writing, with the dates, the room and the total?

Our answers: overnight stays follow the season's rules and we tell you when you ask; prices are for the whole cottage or tent; duplex cottages have an attached bathroom, single cottages and tents share a common one; we're near Chera Dip, a short ride south of the jetty; check-in is from 1:00 pm and check-out by 12:00 pm (noon); and we confirm everything, with the payment and cancellation terms, in the WhatsApp chat.

Get it in writing

Most bookings on the island are made by phone or WhatsApp. That's fine, as long as you have the booking in writing: the dates, the room, the number of guests and the total. Keep that message with your ship ticket.

Be careful with anyone who offers something the season's rules don't allow, like a tourist seat from Teknaf or a barbecue party on the beach at night. If one promise breaks the rules, ask yourself what else might not be true.

Book the ship and the room together

A room is only useful if you can get a ship seat for the same dates. Last season every ticket carried a travel pass with a QR code and only 2,000 people could visit each day, so popular dates sold out. Book both early for weekends and holidays. Our article on Saint Martin ship tickets lists every ship and fare.

If you stay with us, we can book your ship seats in the same WhatsApp chat as your cottage, and we confirm the current fare before you pay.

If you want the quiet south

El Marena Eco Resort is near Chera Dip beach, at the southern end of the island. Every cottage comes with a complimentary drink, mineral water and 24-hour room service, and every guest can use our open-air seafood restaurant, barbecue spot, football ground and children's playground. Solar panels on site help power the resort. More about us is on our about page.
