Pets are welcome at El Marena. Here's what to sort out before you go, from the ship to the heat, and how to keep the island's wildlife safe too.
Not many places on Saint Martin's Island say yes to pets. We do: pets are allowed at El Marena Eco Resort near Chera Dip. Getting a dog or cat to the island still takes some planning, so here's what we'd tell a friend.
The island opens only in the season the government sets. Last season (2025–26) it was open from 1 November to 31 January, with day trips only in November; the 2026–27 rules weren't out when we wrote this (October 2026).
First, ask the ship
The crossing from Nuniarchhara jetty in Cox's Bazar takes about 5 to 6 hours each way. Each ship operator decides whether pets can come on board and where they have to stay, so ask the operator before you buy the ticket, and keep the answer in writing. What to pack for your pet
- A carrier or a short lead and harness: the jetty, the ship and the vans are busy.
- Water and a bowl: it's warm in the sun even in winter.
- Their usual food: pet food is hard to find on the island.
- Any medicine, and your vet's phone number. There's no vet we know of on the island.
- Poo bags: take everything back with you. The island has strict rules on litter and plastic.
On the island
- Keep them on a lead on the beach. Sea turtles nest on the island's beaches in winter, and the island has stray dogs.
- Watch the rocks: the shore near Chera Dip is sharp coral rock, hard on paws.
- Shade at midday, and fresh water after a swim in the sea.
- Quiet hours at El Marena are 11 pm to 7 am, for people and pets alike.
Staying with your pet at El Marena
Pets can stay with you in our duplex cottages, single cottages and tents. There's plenty of open ground around the cottages, and the resort is in the quiet south, away from the crowds at the jetty.
