Bangladesh's drone rules aren't simple, and Saint Martin's is a protected area near a border. Here's what we know and what to check.
Many visitors want aerial shots of Saint Martin's Island. Before you pack a drone, here's what we found about the rules. We're a resort, not lawyers, so check with the authorities before you fly.
Bangladesh's drone policy
- The government approved a Drone Registration and Operation Policy in 2020 (The Daily Star). Reports say small recreational drones under 5 kg have fewer rules, while commercial drones need registration and permission from the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) (TBS, DFDL).
- In 2020, ISPR said anyone wanting to fly a drone needed written permission, applied for at least 45 days ahead (Dhaka Tribune).
- Drones can't be flown near airports or other key installations (Dhaka Tribune).
We couldn't find a clear, current official rule for drones on Saint Martin's itself. The island is an Ecologically Critical Area close to the Myanmar border, so assume you need permission, ask the local administration, and don't fly if anyone in authority tells you not to.

Flying and photographing with respect
- Don't fly over people, homes or fishing boats without asking.
- Ask before photographing local people, especially women and children.
- Keep drones and lights away from nesting turtles and birds.
- No flash on the beach at night in the turtle season.
Shooting at El Marena
Commercial photography and filming are allowed at the resort. That covers the resort itself; flying a drone still needs whatever permission the authorities require. Tell us your plans when you book.
